An Amazon Air cargo plane overshot the runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport, killing five people and seriously injuring five others. The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft crashed just before 14:00 local time (19:00 GMT) after departing from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The flight also hit several vehicles on the ground.
Amazon stated it is working with local authorities to investigate the incident. All flights were grounded by the FAA as fire crews raced to the crash site. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reported that rescue crews arrived within seconds.
Three of the five injured are in critical condition, with injuries classified as unknown. The crash occurred during a busy travel weekend, with the TSA predicting 17 million travelers at US airports leading up to Labor Day. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause, with a news conference planned for Monday.
The plane, operated by 21 Air, overran Miami International Airport's diagonal runway and was disabled near a parking lot servicing an Amazon warehouse. Light thunderstorms and gusting winds were present at the time.
